Speakers Chief Councillor John Jack
John Alan Jack is the elected Chief-Councillor for the Huu-ay-aht First Nations, a modern treaty nation located on the west coast of Vancouver Island. His traditional name is Sayaač̓atḥ and he has served in HFN government since 2009.
Having earned a BA in Global Studies with Distinction in 2004, John began his career as a member of HFN’s Constitution Committee and helped draft its foundation of law in the era of treaty self-government. He is a strong proponent of economic development, ethical natural resource development, building productive partnerships with senior governments and business, and gender equity in his community and beyond. John also serves as the Chairperson of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, the Vice-Chair of the Island Coastal Economic Trust, and he sits as a Director for the Gathering Voices Society and a Governor for North Island College.
He lives in the Oceanside area with his patient wife, and three young children.
