Speakers Honourable Spencer Chandra Herbert

Spencer Chandra Herbert is one of the longest serving MLAs in the legislature. He was first elected in 2008 as MLA for Vancouver-Burrard (now Vancouver-West End) and was the youngest MLA in the legislature.

Spencer was sworn in as Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation in July 2025. Prior to that he was Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. He was also honoured to serve as Deputy Speaker of the House in the last Parliament.

During his long political career, he has been a passionate advocate for wild-salmon protection, environmental stewardship, human rights and the rights of renters.

His work to reduce homelessness led to the founding of Vancouver’s Rent Bank, which has helped keep thousands of people in their homes. Spencer’s work in the legislature also restored government funding to thousands of charities through gaming grants and to the BC Arts Council. His work to support tourism and the creative industries helped lead to the creation of Destination BC and Creative BC.

Prior to becoming an MLA, Spencer was an award-winning artist and performing arts producer and was an elected Vancouver Park Board Commissioner from 2005 until 2008.

Off the clock, Spencer can be found singing karaoke, riding his bike, and getting into B.C.’s beautiful wilderness with his husband Romi and son Dev.
