General Manager, Rio Tinto BC Works
Prior to joining Rio Tinto, Affonso started his career at Alcoa as an intern in 1994, where he worked at a number of different plants and in all value chains. Affonso went from intern to electrical engineer within his first three years, and obtained his first leadership challenge in 1998. Since this date, he has been leading different groups worldwide, including in Brazil, the United States, Canada and Australia
In August 2019, Affonso moved to Kitimat with his family to become general manager of BC Works. In his current role, he leads Rio Tinto Aluminium’s business in British Columbia, incorporating the Kitimat Smelter, Kemano Power Generation Facility and the Nechako Watershed.
Affonso believes that aluminium is a metal that will play an increasingly important role in our lives, being indefinitely recyclable, light weight, malleable, efficient and sustainable. Building long-term, respectful partnerships with Rio Tinto’s host communities, stakeholders, First Nations and employees is the top priority for Affonso in all his endeavours, with a focus on delivering high value enhancements to the environment, employee health and safety and optimal business performance.
